the non-existence of the soul

Consider the following on the possibility of the existence of "soul" in the sense that people think that soul is something you take with you from life to life, or wherever. You are constantly changing. When you were (your body was) born you had no soul (identity). when you developed memory your "soul" was born (your continuity of consciousness). That is, your identity is dependent on your stream of consciousness - if you get amnesia then your identity is destroyed. Or suppose that one day you woke up in a brand new life, and your memories indicated to you that you had always been in that life. It is impossible then to have any link to your old self and that self is no longer you. Your impression of having lived the previous day and all the days before that in the current life is as good as the actual experience to you, therefore memory is not a part of soul, and it is no better than history, as it is myth. This is why permanent soul does not or can not exist - the buddhists are right. You do not have a soul. You only have perception and memory. Memory can be changed and manipulated, whereas perception can only be interpretted - your way of viewing what you perceive is totally under your control. The world can be anything you wish for it to be and mean.
