it is "clear" to us as mono-minded entities that existence is made of physical material. my idea of death is that my perspective is dissolved or deactivated. the material i am made of is reallocated. does a machine have the awareness that its "knowledge" has been destroyed (or backed up, transferred, duplicated, as the case may be) when it is turned off and recycled?
consciousness is a sense that we feel because of chemical reactions. because of this, i am aware of the possibility of post-consciousness. not to be confused with any concept of afterlife, but to me it is fully possible that conscious ideation occurs in a way that isn't bound by one-mindedness. the mind exists on a macro level. the consciousness operating has consciousness because of the cooperation of endless numbers of organisms or chemicals
